Rapid Scale Up for Child Health: Reducing Pediatric Diarrhea Mortality

Diarrhea remains a leading cause of death in children under-5, causing 530,000 deaths annually—yet use of ORS and zinc, a simple and affordable treatment that can prevent up to 93% of pediatric diarrheal deaths, has increased only marginally since first introduced nearly 50 years ago. Presenters will share results from programs in 5 developing countries that aimed to increase ORS and zinc coverage and discuss the key interventions for the success of these programs. Presenters will also discuss remaining gaps and opportunities for improving ideal ORS and zinc use, barriers to full scale up in the public and private sectors, and address how engaging a wide range of stakeholders is crucial for rapid, sustainable change.
