New Tools for Longstanding Challenges: Applying GIS Technology in Immunization

Reaching eligible children for immunization requires updated details on the population and where, when, and how immunization services are being delivered. The Maternal and Child Survival Program (MCSP) is working with the State Primary Health Care Development Agency (SPCHDA) in Bauchi and Sokoto States, Nigeria to use geographic information systems (GIS) to more efficiently and accurately capture population; establish processes and tools for using GIS to improve micro planning and produce maps for 272 health facilities. Identification of new settlements, greater accuracy of physical distances and features derived from satellite images and geocoordinates are improving the planning for immunization services. Throughout the process, MCSP has documented the approach including how GIS was introduced at each level of the government, and the opportunities, and challenges.
