Making Inroads in The Childhood Obesity Epidemic

In the Region of the Americas, the fight against childhood obesity remains a leading public health issue. In 2014, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) Member States agreed on a Plan of Action for the Prevention of Obesity in Children and Adolescents and has since made inroads in addressing this growing pandemic. The regional plan calls for stakeholder engagement and action that is both multi-faceted and multi-sectoral. Civil society organizations have played their role by leveraging both technical and policy know how to support this effort. The session will summarize country achievements and leading thought leaders. Case studies from the region illustrating how countries are implementing the a PAHO Plan of Action will demonstrate how fiscal policies and regulatory measures are making a difference.
