How to Cost Health Services Regularly and Why That’s Useful

Have you ever wondered how to calculate the cost of health services? What cost elements are important and why is cost per service useful? How can you use cost information to manage services more efficiently. We will address these questions, and others, by providing an overview of service-delivery costing methods, traditional cost studies versus a cost system, and basic costing math. The session will present a new costing system developed by the USAID-funded MEASURE Evaluation: the online Reproductive Health Cost Reporting System (RHCRS), which combines existing annual service and expense data to estimate the cost of individual health services. In an interactive segment, participants will answer cost-related questions using the RHCRS. We will discuss challenges to collecting cost data and the usefulness of cost systems.
