How and When to Use the Pregnancy Checklist and Pregnancy Tests

Ruling out pregnancy is universally recommended prior to starting hormonal contraception or intrauterine devices (IUD). Recently designed job aid — How and When to Use the Pregnancy Checklist and Pregnancy Tests — streamlines the guidance on how to use three common approaches to rule out pregnancy, helping providers to decide when to rely on a pregnancy checklist, a urine pregnancy test, or simple delay of contraceptive method initiation until next menses. Issues discussed will include the possible consequences of denying a woman immediate initiation of a chosen contraceptive method, rationale for a Quick Start of some contraceptive methods, how and why the job aid was developed, how to use it, and possible programmatic implications of providing clear guidance for ruling out pregnancy. Role plays and case studies will provide session participants with opportunities for problem-solving and for practicing using the job aid.
