Diagnose, Design, Deliver, Redesign: Applying Implementation Science to Nutrition

*Recommended Audience: Mid-Level Professionals

There are two scenarios leading to programs not achieving their intended effects. First a failure of the program to address the primary cause of the problem (theory failure), and second, where the interventions are not implemented as designed (implementation failure). In this session, we introduce a set of approaches and methods that can be used to understand and address bottlenecks to implementation (Implementation Science). We will present case studies of (1) designing for impact and (2) program course-correction based on process evaluation. Participants will be invited to put on their programming hats and use case study data to make design and implementation decisions. Lastly, we will discuss the accountability implications for program participants, and the value for money realized through program investments.

Speakers: Mduduzi Mbuya, Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN); David Pelletier, Cornell University; Ashley Aakesson, John Snow Inc.; Philip Moses, John Snow Inc.
