Challenges in Post-Abortion Care: Meeting Differing Client Needs

Post-abortion care clients range from those who have undergone an induced abortion and desire to avoid another pregnancy to those wishing to conceive again after a miscarriage. The WHO recommends that women wait for at least six months after a miscarriage or induced abortion before becoming pregnant again. Unfortunately, uptake of post-abortion family planning remains low in many areas, partially due to myths and rumors among providers and clients. Conversely, couples who do wish to try again may be unnecessarily counseled to delay conception. Findings from a systematic review and meta-analysis (Kangatharan et al., 2017) show that an interval of less than six months following miscarriage is not associated with adverse outcomes in the next pregnancy, suggesting a need to revise current guidance.
