A Daily Pill to Prevent HIV: Oral Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP)

Over the past several years, momentum has been building around the science and implementation of oral ARV-based pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to prevent the spread of HIV. Popping a pill to prevent HIV? So what does the science say? Who is it for? How will they get it? This session dives into the science and policy of HIV prevention’s newest intervention – oral PrEP. We’ll cover what the research tells us, what are the global debates surrounding PrEP and how various countries have moved forward – or not – with implementation. We’ll look at the roll-out experience in Kenya, where Jhpiego has been supporting the Government in its national scale-up of oral PrEP to highlight the communications and implementation challenges of introducing oral PrEP without stigmatizing end users or the intervention. The session will consist of a presentation and Q&A period.

Speakers: Dr. Delivette Castor, USAID; Dr. Timothy Mah, USAID; Dr. Jason Reed, Jhpiego
